When You Get Something, Do Something

When You Get Something, Do Something!

It is human nature. When we don’t know what to do, we often do nothing. But when you are facing something legal, doing nothing almost always makes the situation worse. So, if someone delivers legal papers to you or something legal comes it the mail, do something right away.

For ordinary people, legal papers make no sense. They are full of unfamiliar legal terms. Sometimes they tell you that you have a limited amount of time to do something but don’t tell you what to do or how to do it. Even when you have no clue about what to do from the papers, there is most often a very short time to make the right kind of response or you will lose your chance to have input into whatever is happening and it may result in your losing a right or having to pay money. You may only have 7 days or 10 days to respond, sometimes less. When you are busy, and we are all busy, that time goes by in a flash.

If you can, talk to a lawyer to get answers. If you can’t afford a lawyer, you can get help at the Legal Assistance Center.  Bring your paperwork. The LAC can help you understand what you got and how to respond to protect your rights.  So remember, when you get something legal, do something right away to protect your rights.
