Unemployment Benefits Extended for COVID-19
If you are sick with or caring for loved ones who are ill or home due to school or other closures because of the COVID-19 virus, you may qualify for additional unemployment benefits. Governor Whitmer’s Order extends the time to apply from 14 to 28 days, increases the length of benefits from 20 to 26 weeks, extends the time to apply from 14 to 28 days, and suspends some of the normal requirements such as in person registration and work searches.
Unemployment offices are now closed to the public, although they continue to take appointments. You are encouraged to apply on-line through the Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM), or call 1-866-500-0017 to speak with a representative.
To apply, you will need:
- Your social security card
- Your state issued driver’s license or ID card
- The name and addresses for employers over the last 18 months (including last date of employment)
- The most recent employer’s Federal Employer ID number (FEIN) and Employer Account Number (EAN)
- If you are not a citizen, you will need your Alien Registration card and the expiration of your work authorization
- You will also need to recertify your eligibility every two weeks.
